The first serious attempt to create an artificial intelligence system was made in the mid-twentieth century. Researchers developed logic-based AI systems that could perform simple tasks, such as playing chess. The development of these systems led to the creation of expert systems, which were designed to solve complex problems in specific domains.
The Dartmouth Conference (1956): A group of computer scientists, including John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky, convened at Dartmouth College to discuss the possibility of creating machines that could simulate human intelligence.
The Turing Test (1950): Alan Turing proposed a test to determine whether a machine could exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.
The Logic Theorist (1956): Developed by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon, the Logic Theorist was the first program capable of proving mathematical theorems.
The General Problem Solver (1957): Also created by Newell and Simon, the General Problem Solver was a program designed to solve a wide range of problems using a set of general problem-solving rules.
The perceptron (1957): Developed by Frank Rosenblatt, the perceptron was the first artificial neural network capable of learning from examples.
Expert systems (1970s): Expert systems were computer programs designed to mimic the decision-making ability of a human expert in a particular field.
Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov (1997): IBM’s Deep Blue computer defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a highly publicized match, marking a major milestone in AI.
Self-driving cars (2000s): Researchers began working on developing autonomous vehicles capable of driving themselves without human intervention.
Siri (2011): Apple introduced Siri, a voice-activated personal assistant that could understand natural language commands and answer questions.
AlphaGo (2016): Google’s AlphaGo program defeated world champion Lee Sedol in a five-game match of the ancient Chinese board game, Go, marking a significant advancement in AI’s ability to master complex strategy games.
